Burnout is Not a Mental Illness!

From our perspective at The First Rule of Men, we have serious concerns about how men suffering from burnout symptoms are treated. For too long, collapse from stress has, in our opinion, been misclassified as a mental illness, lumped together with depression and anxiety disorders. This misunderstanding has led to ineffective treatment approaches that focus too much on therapy and too little on practical solutions.
Too often, the help traditionally offered only adds insult to injury and prolongs the suffering.
We believe that burnout is not a mental disorder—it is a personal resource mismanagement issue, caused by prolonged stress, overwork, and neglect of basic human needs. Often, the situation is set in motion by unusual and challenging life events.
The available solutions cannot be restricted to only two comfortable chairs and a box of Kleenex. We need real solutions that focus on getting these men back on their feet as soon as possible.
What Defines a Mental Illness?
A condition is typically classified as a mental illness when it meets these criteria:
🔹 Biological dysfunction – Chemical imbalances, genetic predispositions, or neurological disorders that impair normal functioning.
🔹 Persistent and pervasive symptoms – Disorders like depression and schizophrenia persist regardless of external circumstances.
🔹 Lack of logical cause-effect connection – The symptoms often appear without a clear situational trigger.
Let’s be perfectly clear: Burnout does not meet these criteria.
It is entirely situational—a perfectly normal response from a system overloaded by overwork, chronic stress, and the failure to set sustainable personal boundaries. It does not stem from a chemical imbalance or something you are born with.
A burned-out person is not weak and does not need our pity.
Burnout Victims Need Practical Help – Not Just Therapy
While therapy can be beneficial, it is not enough on its own. The people suffering need a solid protocol and strategies for how to manage life as they recharge and find a new direction.
🔹 Delegation & Task Management – Burnout victims often carry too much on their shoulders. Practical assistance in delegating tasks and prioritizing responsibilities is essential.
🔹 Hard Conversations – Burnout sufferers often need help negotiating with employers, setting boundaries with clients, or communicating their struggles to family members. These conversations are painful but necessary for real recovery.
🔹 A Life Reset – The focus must be on creating a sustainable life structure that allows for rest, recuperation, and long-term success.

I think burn out shouldn’t be considered a mental illness. It’s rather an acute personal resource management issue.
It might be based on psychological problems, but putting a high achiever in the same treatment as people with mental disorders or self harm Is not a great solution.
